BURGER, of Virginia, formerly a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, was nominated by President Nixon to be Chief Justice of the United States on May 21, 1969; the nomination was confirmed by the Senate on June 9, 1969; he was commissioned on June 23, 1969, and took the oath and his seat on the same date.
