husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Chrift.

3 But I fear left by any means, as the ferpent beguiled Eve through his fubtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the fimplicity that is in Chrift.

4 For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit which ye have not received, or another gospel which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 5 For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest apostles.

6 But though I be rude in speech, yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made manifeft| among you in all things.

7 Have I committed an offence in abafing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? 8 I robbed other churches, taking wages of them, to do you service.

9 And when I was present with you and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren which

have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and fo will I keep myself.

10 As the truth of Chrift is in me, no man shall stop me of this boasting in the regions of Achaia.

11 Wherefore? because I love you not? God knoweth.

12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occafion from them which defire occafion; that wherein they glory they may be found even as we,

13 For fuch are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Chrift.

14 And no marvel: for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15 Therefore it is no great thing if his minifters also be transformed as the minifters of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

16 I say again, Let no man think me a fool: if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little.

17 That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boafting. 18 Seeing that many glocame from Macedonia sup-ry after the flesh, I will glory plied: and in all things I alfo.

19 For

19 For ye suffer fools gladly, feeing ye yourselves are wife.

20 For ye fuffer if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himfelf, if a man finite you on the face.

21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinfoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.

22 Are they Hebrews? fo am I. Are they Ifraelites? so am I. Are they the feed of Abraham? so am I.

23 Are they minifters of Chrift? (I fpeak as a fool) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prifons more frequent, in deaths oft.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save

one.

25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I ftoned, thrice I fuffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;

27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in faftings often, in cold and nakedness.

28 Befides those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.

29 Who is weak, and I am not weak ? who is offended, and I burn not?

30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.

31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Chrift, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

CHAP. IV.

Therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, befeech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

2 With all lowliness and meekness, with long-fuffering, forbearing one another in love;

3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

5 One Lord, one faith, one baptifm,

6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

7 But unto every one of us is given grace, according to the measure of the gift of

Chrift.

8 Wherefore he faith, When he afcended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto

men.

9 (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he alfo defcended first into the lower parts of the earth?

10 He that defcended is the fame also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things)

11 And he gave fome, apostles; and fome, prophets; and fome, evangelifts; and fome, paftors and teachers;

12 For the perfecting of the faints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Chrift:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the fta

ture of the fulness of Chrift:

14. That we henceforth be no more children toffed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the fleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Chrift:

16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together, and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk, not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, G2

18 Having 19 Who being past feeling, have given themselves over unto lafciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

18 Having the under-1 his hands the thing which is standing darkened, being a- good, that he may have to lienated from the life of give to him that needeth. God, through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:

20 But ye have not fo learned Chrift;

21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus :

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lufts;

23 And be renewed in the fpirit of your mind :

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

25 Wherefore, putting away lying, fpeak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

26 Be ye angry and fin not: let not the fun go down upon your wrath :

27 Neither give place to the devil.

29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minifter grace unto the hearers.

30 And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are fealed unto the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice :

32 And be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Chrift's fake hath forgiven you.

[blocks in formation]

2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a facrifice to God for a fweet-fmelling favour.

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you as becometh saints;

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jefting,

28. Let him that stole, steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with | which are not convenient: but

but rather giving of thanks. 1 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

5 For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean perfon, nor covetous man who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Chrift and of God.

6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of difobedience.

7 Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light :

9 (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth ;)

10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

II And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them,

12 For it is a shame even to fpeak of those things which are done of them in secret.

13 But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifeft is light.

14 Wherefore he faith, Awake thou that fleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wife,

17 Wherefore, be ye not unwife, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

19 Speaking to yourselves in pfalms and hymns and spiritual fongs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Chrift;

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own hufbands as unto the Lord.

23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

as the

24 Therefore, church is fubject unto Chrift, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

26 That he might fanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

27 That he might present
