INTRODUCTION.

THE following Discourses were occasioned, as will be seen, by the decease of the Wife and the young Child of one of the beloved Missionaries at Constantinople. The deceased fell victims of the plague, under circumstances of peculiar distress. The nature of the disease was not immediately apprehended, but when it was ascertained, Mr. D. the husband and father was constrained to become the sole nurse of his sick family, that others might not be exposed to the horrors of the contagion. He carried the remains of the deceased child in his arms to the place of burial, and dug its grave with his own hands. Alone with Mrs. D. through her sickness and death, and alone through a subsequent period of thirty days' quarantine,
