ineffable glory, he remembered fallen man-that there was no one to redeem his brother, or give to God a ransom. Then he said, 'Lo I come, to do thy will, O God!' when he knew that naught but the agony of a sinless soul, sustained by infinite strength, could expiate the guilt of a lost world. Amazing love! Compassion like a God.' "February 27. Yesterday spent with my very dear friend, Miss L. How expressive of my Heavenly Father's care is her friendship? as if he knew that the benefits and pleasures of a reciprocal interchange of feeling and sentiment, were just what this thirsty spirit craved; and directed a kindred heart to participate in the joys and sorrows incident to this life.

"Sabbath evening. What means this bitter cup? The future seems one vast field of labor and toil; every earthly hope appears to be torn away or shrouded in one scene of self-denial. Oh for one ray of light in this dark hour! Something seems to whisper, 'I will show you how great things you must suffer for my name's sake.'

"March 24. Conference, at which six gave evidence of being born again."

From many subsequent remarks in her journal, the reader will perceive that the business in which she was engaged had become uncongenial to her feelings. To devote her time more exclusively to the Redeemer's kingdom was now her ardent desire; and we have thought it was as difficult for her to bring her mind down from heavenly contem

plations to the ordinary cares of earth, as for most Christians to raise their minds from those cares to things above. It is not strange, therefore, that she should find it extremely irksome to be obliged to conform to the wishes of the vain and trifling; yet she could not feel justified in taking one step to relieve herself from this state which she deemed servitude, without plain indications that it was the Divine will. Under date of April 5, she says,

"Oh how unsuited to the best feelings of the heart are the cares, fashions, and customs, of this present life? and must I be called from the work which constitutes the bliss of life, to labor for the things that perish? and instead of studying the perfections of God, study to please the fancy of the fanciful? O my Father! how long shall these chains bear so heavily upon me, and bind the hand that would be entirely devoted to thee?

"April 15. To-day, baptism was administered to seven willing converts.

"April 19. Yesterday devoted to the perusal of Edwards on the Affections, and it appeared to be armed for the destruction of life; as if sweeping away the hope, which constitutes the bliss of life, the bliss of thought. Hours gone by seemed coming back, only to discompose, and distract-hours which had passed for sweet communion with God, now appeared the result of a vain and heated imagination. Yet hope was keenly alive, and laboring to sustain itself. The work did indeed seem like the refiner's fire, to consume the dross, that the

pure gold should come forth to the praise of the Purifier; and may he sit, as a refiner's fire, till every thing false shall be consumed; and high, and holy principles, with corresponding affections, reign triumphant.

"O my soul, wait thou only upon the Lord; endure the refining process, until fashioned like unto himself. See him sitting, waiting to discover his fair image, with mercy in his eye, and sympathy in his heart, kindly whispering, 'Satan has desired to have thee, that he might sift thee as wheat, but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not.""

The following letter, written about this time, to the late venerable Sylvanus Boardman, father of the Missionary, gives a continued account of the revival.

"VENERABLE FATHER:

"BLOOMFIELD, April, 1838.

"I have wished much to tell you of the pleasing revival here, and more than once have taken my pen to do so; but supposing you would have a more correct and interesting account from some other source, have laid it aside.

"But I deem it a privilege to write to you, and my credulous heart prompts me to believe that it will not be uninteresting to you, to receive some account of that interesting work from my hand. As it regards the protracted meeting, I need say nothing. You were present, to know and feel its worth. Our meetings since have been full of interest; still

ness and solemnity have always characterized them. The countenance has appeared the index to the heart, telling what was being effected there.

"In all the relations given by those who obtained hope, the only reason for loving God was, because he first loved them-that he had chosen them or they never would have chosen him; and as reasons for repentance, they had broken a holy law, and were justly exposed to its penalty. They expressed no sorrow on the account of this penalty, but because they had sinned; and mourned that this sorrow was no deeper.

"I think you would have said in regard to them, with the Apostle, 'Ye are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus.' Many of the church have seemed like 'captive exiles loosed from the pit,' and the promise has been fulfilled, the redeemed of the Lord shall return with singing unto Zion.'

"Between twenty-five and thirty have been made subjects of this revival, many of whom have been baptized, and others are waiting an opportunity.

Several, when relating their experience, referred to remarks made by father Boardman, as being productive of good to them. I mention this as proof that your last days-if not your best-are useful; and permit me to say, they have been useful to me. I think that I am writing to one who has too much grace, to feel anything but grateful ⚫ emotions for the good he has been enabled to do."

"APRIL 20. The moments of the past seem coming back, as gold more once than purified. Oh, can I ever forget the time when, and the place where, Infinite Fullness vouchsafed to notice and to bless exceeding emptiness? Can I ever forget the holy rapture occasioned by the glorious prospects of the future? Just as well may the sun forget to set. But what is man, that thou art mindful of him, or the son of man, that thou visitest him!'

"Oh, this house of clay! how poor to embody an immortal spirit, that makes its refuge God, God its thought, God its bliss, and God its centre. O utterance! why art thou so palsied? O language! why art thou so powerless! But for this, would talk of his goodness, and tell of his power. If I make the attempt, it is only perfect inferiority; if I presume to describe, it is only to mock description. O Heaven! grant Heaven's help, to describe Heaven's glory!

"Well might the Apostle say, 'unspeakable!' Yes, infinitely beyond the reach of language. And . what am I, to talk of thee, I who am of yesterday and know nothing! The language of holv silence
