criticisms of the world without, will no more disturb her peaceful repose. For the marriage of the Lamb will come, and the bride be ready. And blessed are they who are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb;' 'He will feed them, and lead them unto living fountains of water, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.'

"A hope so much divine,

May trials well endure.'

"The inspired volume says, 'Let the congregation of the saints praise Him.' 'Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.' And shall woman be silent? It was not she who denied him, neither will she now forsake him.

"But where shall she own him? In the sacred desk? It is not her Savior who thus directs her. Does he point her to the church, there to be first in giving her counsels, to assume the place of her superiors in its discipline? Does he teach her to usurp authority even in matters of religion? or ever to present herself as one of strength, or one whose voice, in itself considered, is of consequence to be heard? Certainly not. At home, and abroad, in the church, and elsewhere, it is for her glory, honor, and highest happiness, to submit, as it is fit in the Lord. Not as it is fit in the estimation of a reproachful world, but as it is fit in the Lord.

"Should she, in the ardor of her feelings, presume to run where she is not sent, and there proclaim the glory of her risen Redeemer, when that glory would be better proclaimed by her silence? Should she speak of the priceless gems in her experience, which

she ought only to ponder in her own breast, then would she mournfully tell, that instead of being subject to the law of her Maker, she was but subject to the promptings of her own officious and obtrusive heart.

"But is she always to be silent upon a subject on which rest all her hopes of future blessedness? When she remembers the hour in which her soul was pierced with a sense of the exceeding sinfulness of sin; when, in consequence of this, she supposed herself lost to all, but the wretchedness of the wretched, the guilt of the condemned; when she felt that both heaven and earth conspired to pronounce her sentence; with none to save her deathless spirit, but the Being whom she had treated with the most daring neglect; the Being whose indignation she had merited, whose mercy she had forfeited; when at this awful hour, the hand of her Redeemer was stretched forth to save, and raise her from misery so deep, to the blessedness of the blessed; when she remembers all this, will she violate the Apostle's command, if she speak of that wonderful interposition that brought salvation to her; if she, like Mary, run to bring the disciples word; to tell them how great things Jesus had done for her?

"Would she do the thing he would count insufferable, if, in the prayer or conference meeting, she make mention of the righteousness of Christ, and its perfect adaptedness to her, as a lost sinner? Would this be a violation, either of the Apostle's command, or of the strictest rules of propriety?

"If to perfect that 'new song,' 'Worthy is the Lamb that was slain;' the voice of the infant, born

but to-day, must join with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, yea, with angels, cherubim and seraphim; if in a multitude which no man can number, the weaker voices are heard echoing the praises due to redemption, amid strains so eloquent, so lofty, and in the presence of a Majesty so holy and so high, is it unsuitable that their feeble echo should be heard in the presence of beings so inferior, and so low?

"If a measure of that praise which swells the disembodied spirit above, is meted out to the embodied spirit below, must these emotions be suppressed, and the tongue be forbidden to utter the holy aspirations thus awakened, because it is woman's? Must the praises of a spirit destined to immortality, be thus paralyzed? Must minds so capacious, so Godlike, be enslaved by the fancied wisdom of this world? God forbid! For how shall we who are under obligations so great, live, but in humble acknowledgement of his benevolence? live, but to be dead to the world, and alive to God? Oh, those words, so vast, so full, 'alive unto God!'

"May woman learn the adorning she needs, to be prepared to show forth his praise; for those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Oh, may she learn that it is not by the expression of undisciplined feelings, or unqualified thought, that she can reflect his perfections, but by the exhibition of that spirit, and those graces, which must come to her, not through the wisdom of this world, but through the knowledge of God, and Christ Jesus our Lord. And may there be honorable women not a few,' thus prepared to show forth

his praise. And may all remember the words of our blessed Savior when he said, 'Behold my mother, and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.""

We think the discerning reader will perceive that Miss C.'s remarks in the foregoing extracts, are so qualified, that no female can justly take encouragement from them, to transgress the rules of decorum, or occupy that time in social meetings, that might more advantageously be used by the other sex.

CHAPTER IX.

Suffers Reproaches-Allusion to theRev. Mr. Houghton-Mysterious Sufferings-The World a Clog-Elevating Contemplations-Mourns her Indifference-Phenomena in her Character.

SOME unkind remarks, concerning herself, and those who were dear to her, are referred to in the following entry.

May 25. May grace sustain under all that burdens; especially under reproaches; but above all, may it preserve me from all unholiness of thought, or deed. And if reproaches come, may it be for righteousness' sake. Would learn by this, to sympathize with those loved ones who are so cruelly censured. Oh, may we all suffer as Christians; to suffer as such, how sweet the thought. Oh, for Christian independence, integrity, and uprightness! that we may not be 'afraid of man that shall die,' or forget the 'Lord our Maker.'

"May 26. May God regard the just, and bless them, and the sins of his followers forgive. May our transgressions not hinder his mighty works; and may the truth dispensed, be blessed for his own name's sake.

"Saturday eve. Another week gone! Happy thought! One week nearer that appointed day, when promises exceeding great shall be fulfilled. How heavenly as they approach.
