The Catholic Encyclopedia

was inaugurated on the distinct principle of presenting the story of Catholicity with the utmost fairness and impartiality. Its purpose is to let the facts speak for themselves. The work stands on its merits as a fair representation of the facts of history and human achievement in thought, in science, in discovery, etc. Only the prejudiced can for a moment deny that within the libraries of Catholic scholarship there is a store of learning, of philosophy, and of science, that is worthy of respectful consideration and study. The Catholic Encyclopedia presents that wondrous tale of the achievements of the Church in all fields of research, of scholarship, of art, etc.; and for that reason is a valuable addition to any library.

THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA is a veritable treasure house of architecture and painting, reproducing, in half-tones and color-plates, the masterpieces of Christian art. THIRTY-TWO BROAD DEPARTMENTS

"No one who is interested in human history, past and present, can ignore the Catholic Church, either as an institution which has been the central figure in the civilized world for nearly two thousand years, decisively affecting its destinies, religious, literary, scientific, social and political, or as an existing power whose influence and activity extend to every part of the globe. In the past century the Church has grown both extensively and intensively among Englishspeaking peoples. Their living interests demand that they should have the means of informing themselves about this vast institution, which, whether they are Catholics or not, affects their fortunes and their destiny."-From the Editor's Preface.

"It represents a mass of learning and research and knowledge carefully selected and edited that has no parallel in dealing with a single great institution. As a masterly presentation of the facts in regard to probably the most influential force in modern history, it is an essential work for any man who wishes to be well informed.". S. S. McClure, Editor McClure's Magazine.

FAMILY TRADITION

An attack on the right to possess property is not only a stab given directly to society, but what is more true, to the family. Is there, in fact, outside religion, anything more conservative of the family or more contributory to its progress than to cultivate the land which has been inherited from one's forefathers, and to bequeath it to a beloved offspring enriched with one's sweat, if not augWhat are mented by one's labor? property, inheritance and patrimony but the cult of ancestors and the love

of offspring? Property represents the sacrifices made by one's forefathers and the source of the daily bread of one's children. The love of one's ancestors lives on in the land which preserves their footprints, the furrows of their ploughs and the fruits of their industry. Past, present and future meet on this spot. Take away, then, this rallying ground of family tradition, love and veneration, and the other bonds that hold it together will not sustain the dismembering shocks that time will bring about.

FAMILY LOYALTY

If a man cannot be loyal to his home, and to those who love him, then he cannot be loyal to anything that is good. There is something mean beyond description in any man who cares more for anything in this world than the honor and the confidence and love of his family. There is something radically wrong in such a man, and the quicker and more

The traditional good of his head to the sole of his foot. He is as weak as a baby, vain as a peacock, selfish as a pig, and as unprin-. cipled as a thief. He has not one redeeming trait upon which a reasonable self-respect can be built and braced.
