THE PARISH MONTHLY

OFFICIAL ORGAN OF THE

CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF GOOD COUNSEL,
232-238 East 90th Street, New York
REVEREND JAMES N. CONNOLLY, RECTOR

PARISH NOTES

We wish all our parishioners a Happy New Year. The great number who approached the altar on Christmas morning gives us reason to believe that God's grace is in the homes of most of our people. May His grace and blessing continue to abide there. Let us begin the new year with a determination to be faithful to God, and let us persevere in our good resolution. We will then have real happiness. Troubles and trials and difficulties will come to us as they came last year. They come to everyone, but we will turn them to good account, and by our patience and resignation to God's will make them stepping stones on our way to perfection.

*

We publish a list of those who won the prizes at the Bazaar Drawing. We are very thankful to all who helped us in the effort to lessen the debt on our Parish House. We are particularly grateful to those who assisted us every night at the bazaar by giving us so much of their time.

The reception of new members into the Sodality of the Children of Mary took place on Sunday, December 13th, at the Vesper service. There was a very large attendance, and fifty-six new members were received into the sodality by Father Talbot, the Spiritual Director. We congratulate these young ladies, and hope that the membership will continue to increase.

The Christmas Entertainment on Sunday afternoon, December 27th, in the school auditorium of the boys' and girls' school, was a most enjoyable affair. We were very much pleased to see such a large attendance, and we feel satisfied that everyone was proud of our children. We thank the little ones for giving us so much pleasure.

THE SCHOOL FUND ASSOCIA-
TION

We organized the School Fund Association in November, 1904, and most of our collectors are with us yet as efficient and faithful as on the first day they began their voluntary labors. We say labors, because we appreciate thoroughly what a work it is for them to go from house to house every week and keep that work up for four years. God will

continue to bless them for what they are doing for Him. They receive no reward in this life, and they are not working for such a reward. We believe their reward will be great in heaven.

Most of our first members are with us yet, faithful supporters of the parish. New names have been added each year. Some have moved away and others have discontinued, but withal we have a very good showing. We know of quite a few cases where members made real sacrifices to continue what they began, and they, too, will be richly blessed by God.

With this year we change the title of our Association and call it the Church Fund Association. In all other respects it will be the same.

Our parish works have grown and developed, and we concluded to embrace them all in one association. We have known of persons attending this church who did not join the School Association, and gave as a reason that they had no children going to school. When we call on them this year they will not be able to give the same excuse, for they certainly go to the church, and we expect them to take their share of the work of supporting their parish.

We have reason to hope, therefore, that there will be a large increase in the membership of the Church Fund Association.

We have a card catalogue with the name and address of every member of the Association from the first day it was started. We have destroyed no cards, and we preserve the cards of those who discontinued just as carefully as we do those who are active members. We can refer to these cards at any time and see just who are the ones who are really bearing their share of the burden of maintaining a parish as large as this one is. Now is the time to add your name to the active list.

FEAST OF THE HOLY NAME

A Solemn Triduum in honor of the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus will be conducted by the Society of the Holy Name on January 13th, 14th, and 15th, TG09. Sermons at 8 p. m. On Sunday, January 17th, the members will receive Holy Communion at the 7 o'clock Mass.

It is our most earnest desire that all the men of our parish, who have not already done so, enroll themselves in our branch of the Society of the Holy Name

The Old Year and the New
Father Ryan

How swift they go,

Life's many years,

With their winds of woe

And their storms of tears,

And their darkest of nights whose shadowy slopes
Are lit with the flashes of starriest hopes,

And their sunshiny days in whose calm heavens loom
The clouds of the tempest-the shadows of gloom!

And ah! we pray

With a grief so dear,
That the years may stay

When their graves are near;

Tho' the brows of To-morrows be radiant and bright,
With love and with beauty, with life and with light,
The dead hearts of Yesterdays, cold on the bier,
To the hearts that survive them, are evermore dear.
Let the New Year sing

At the Old Year's grave:
Will the New Year bring

What the Old Year gave?

Ah! the Stranger-Year trips over the snows,
And his brow is wreathed with many a rose:
But how many thorns do the roses conceal
Which the roses, when withered, shall so soon reveal?

Let the New Year smile

When the Old Year dies;

In how short a while

Shall the smiles be sighs?

Yes! Stranger-Year, thou hast many a charm
And thy face is fair and thy greeting warm,
But, dearer than thou-in his shroud of snows—
Is the furrowed face of the Year that goes.

Yea! bright New Year,

O'er all the earth,

With song and cheer,

They will hail thy birth;

They will trust thy words in a single hour,
They will love thy face, they will laud thy power;
For the New has charms which the Old has not,
And the Stranger's face makes the Friend's forgot.
